Dear Jean-Claude,
\J
As I mentioned when I left IRCAM in September 1977, I am planning to
spend the time from August to December of this year in France. During this
time I would like to work for IRCAM for 3 months. I understand that your
graphics systems are now working well. I anticipate no great problems in
getting my music printing programs working on your system. The programs are
working very well now. Many Stanford students are using them regularly. We
have recently received a Varian printer (similar to the Versatec) and I am
now working on software for this.
The SCORE program continues to get heavy use here. I have made
several expansions and small changes to the program to facilitate its use
with the "Samson Box". Has anyone at IRCAM tried using SCORE with your
real-time systems? I don't imagine it would be very difficult to do this.
Another project I have been working on (but I'm not sure that IRCAM
needs it) is a greatly revised form of MUSIC5 that will run on the PDP11.
I have simplified many aspects of the program while maintaining the essentials
of MUSIC5 instrument design. It is set up in such a way that it can be
segmented to run on small systems with less than 20k or, as an interactive
program, on the big 11 systems. I've also made a PDP11 version of SCORE.
I'm sure there will be plenty for me to do at IRCAM -- but I don't
mind hard work. Of course I would be available for any special projects
that might come along. I imagine the pay can be similar to that of my last
engagement, plus a reasonable percentage to account for the past 2 years'
inflation.
I hear that you will be leaving IRCAM. When will this be? Who will
be your successor? At this moment I have two daughters in Paris! The older one,
Stefanie, is studying French cinema at the University of Paris until
February. We are hoping that Teresa will come back to California (with
Stefanie) to visit us for a few weeks. I trust that your family is all
well and happy. I look forward to hearing from you.
